UN-SpiderESA (European Space Agency) and CEU (Central European University) are organizing a remote training session to introduce students to the use of the RUS-Copernicus Virtual Machine, to generate maps of the geographical extent of burned areas due to forest fires and floods with case-studies from recent events in Europe.

RUS-Copernicus exercises:

This hands-on exercise will focus on the burned area mapping methodology on the disastrous wildfires that occurred in the Evia Island, in Greece, in August 2021. You will learn the basics of image processing using various vegetation indexes and specific band ratios such as the Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR).

We will be using the Sentinel-2 MSI data, with 10m spatial resolution, to assess the severity of this disastrous event.

In this hands-on session, we will demonstrate the flood mapping methodology on the disastrous event that occurred in June 2021 in Rhineland-Palatinate region in Germany, and you will learn the basics of image processing for such natural disasters.

  • Thursday 18 November 2021: from 10:00 to 14:00 CET
  • Friday 19 November 2021: from 10:00 to 14:00 CET
  • A live Q&A session will close the training on both days.

This training course is intended for students enrolled in a Master´s programme (M.Sc. or M.A.), having interests in the potential of remote sensing techniques for disaster management.  Basic knowledge GIS/remote sensing is required and experience in working with GIS is desirable.

Due to organizational restrictions, a maximum of 25 students from European Universities will be provided with access to the RUS VMs, working on their own laptop. Other students can attend the course and follow the demonstrations.
