In the recent years, the progress made in signal processing schemes brought a significant improvement in the resolution of altimetry sensors. As a result, altimeters on board missions like Sentinel-3 are capable of providing usable estimates not only in the open ocean but also in the coastal zone, over icy regions as well as over rivers and lakes.

During this webinar, divided into two parts, you will be introduced to Sentinel-3 SRAL altimetry data and learn how to process them using the ESA/CNES Broadview Radar Altimetry Toolbox (BRAT):

  • During this first part, an introduction on radar altimetry discusses the Low Resolution Mode (LRM) and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) processing schemes in combination with the analytical and empirical retracking strategies used to produce the typical estimates included in altimetry products. In BRAT, altimetry estimates in the coastal zone are discussed underlining the importance of correctly applying the geophysical corrections.
  • The second part will be oriented to oceanography: the Sentinel-3 27-day repeat cycle will be used to assess the impact of a typhoon event on altimetry estimates. The possibility of generating monthly Sea Level Anomaly (SLA) maps with BRAT will be also discussed as well as the capability of the toolbox to calculate geostrophic currents and the current speed.
