This menu provides information on the two options considered for the computing virtual environments proposed by the RUS Service –Virtual Machine and Docker image based environment-, as well as about the related software and tools.

After analysing the request submitted by a user, the RUS helpdesk will choose the most suitable option with regard to the user’s needs and define in close cooperation with him the sizing of the proposed working environment in terms of duration, memory, disk space

Virtual Machines

The first type of working environment offered by the RUS service consists in Virtual Machines supplied either directly from a cloud provider or from one of the Copernicus Data and Information Access Services (DIAS). This option is dedicated mainly to educational activities, i.e. webinar replay and training sessions.

The source of supply for a Virtual Machine will be selected by the RUS helpdesk, taking into account the fact the user already owns an account on a given DIAS or his geographic proximity with a cloud provider’s data center.

Typically, 2 types of Virtual Machine will be proposed:

  • The first one with 4 CPU cores, 15 Gb RAM and a storage capacity between 100 and 250 Gb;
  • The second one with 8 CPU cores, 30 Gb RAM and a storage capacity between 250 and 500 Gb.

The final specifications may vary from one user to another one depending on their specific needs and will in any case be specified in agreement with the user.

The RUS Virtual Machines are based on the Ubuntu operating system and can be accessed directly through any Web browser. Their performances are constantly monitored by the RUS helpdesk who can be contacted the user in case an incident occurs.

Docker image based environments

The second type of working environment the RUS service provides consists in Docker image based environments. This option is targeted at users who intend to carry out an individual research project.

It requires they have the appropriate facilities to install and run the Docker image they are delivered. These facilities can be a corporate infrastructure, an external cloud provider, a Copernicus Data and Information Access Services (DIAS) platform or even a Personal Computer.

The user will be responsible for downloading and installing the Docker image on the facilities he has proposed. However, the RUS helpdesk will check their adequacy beforehand and in case they are not suitable, a solution will be sought after.

The RUS Docker image is based on the 64 bit Ubuntu operating system and, once installed, will provide similar features to those offered by a Virtual Machine.

Software & tools

By default, your virtual environment will be provided with a standard suite of open source software and tools. This suite basically includes:

  • EO data analysis and processing tools;
  • Software development tools;
  • Desktop monitoring tools;
  • Processing libraries.

Its content may evolve to include major version upgrades but also to take into account users’ feedback.

You will also be able to install the software you need since you are granted administrator rights on your working environment. This means all software compatible with a Linux, either free open-source or commercial off-the-shelf, provided you own the corresponding license in this last case.
