RUS-Copernicus is organizing a remote hands-on training session, aimed at a beginner audience, focusing on the processing of Sentinel-3 OLCI and SLSTR measurements to monitor the Gulf Stream, using SNAP and Panoply software.

Copernicus, the European ambitious programme of Earth observation, delivers regular and accurate data, free of use, and presenting a great interest to study the Earth surface.

Sentinel-3 in particular, can quantify large-scale surface for both ocean and land colour and temperature phenomena.

To fulfil these goals, the mission carries three instruments: the Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI), the Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer (SLSTR) and the Synthetic Aperture Radar Altimeter (SRAL).

After an introduction to the mission and associated products, participants will learn to retrieve manually and automatically Sentinel-3 images from different data hubs. Then, we will show the extensive applications and advantages of combining Sentinel-3 OLCI data with SLSTR products to study the various manifestations of the Gulf Stream.

Attendees will learn how to access and download OLCI and SLSTR data to detect the Gulf Stream in several products, they will use SNAP and Panoply to process the data and become familiar with the RUS environment.

  • Tuesday 30 November – Half-day:  from 09:00 to 13:00 CET
  • Free attendance limited to 20 participants on a first-come, first-served basis
  • Participants must be citizens/residents of the member states contributing to the Copernicus programme  (i.e. EU + Iceland & Norway).
